Within the deciduous forest, there are 5 different zones; the tree stratum zone, the small tree/sapling zone, the shrub zone, the herb zone, and the ground zone.
Tree Stratum Zone
- Contains oak, beech, maple, chestnut hickory, elm, basswood, linden, walnut, and sweet gum trees
- Height ranges between 60 feet and 100 feet
Small Tree/Sapling Zone
- Young, short trees
Shrub Zone
- Contains shrubs like rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel, and huckleberries
Herb Zone
- Contains short plants such as herbal plants
Ground Zone
- Contains lichen, club mosses, and true mosses.
