Types of Animals

     Deciduous forests contain many different groups of types of animals. These forests hold insects, arachnids, mammals, birds, and reptiles. Each of these animals groups are very different. Here are some of the chracteristics of these animal groups.

Insects

  • Insects have six legs
  • Insects have a hard exoskeleton
  • Insects have three pairs of legs
  • Each of their legs is segmented into three sections
  • Their bodies are split into three segments as well
    • These sections are called the head, the thorax, and the abdomen
  • Insects also have a pair antennae  


Arachnids

  •  Arachnids have at least three pairs of legs, most have four
  •  Arachnids also have a hard exoskeleton

Mammals

  •  Mammals are coated in fur
  •  Mammals have mammary glands, which produce milk for their offspring
  •  Most mammals have live births, meaning they don't lay eggs
    • Some mammals do lay eggs, such as platypi, enchidnas
  •  Mammals cannot breathe under water
  •  Mammals only replace their teeth once in their lifetime

Birds

  •  Birds have feathers on their body
  •  Birds lay eggs, and their young have to develop within these eggs
  •  Birds have wings, but not all birds can fly
  •  Birds have beaks
  • Birds also have hollow bones 

Reptiles 

  •  Reptiles are cold-blooded
  •  Reptiles lay eggs
  •  Most reptiles are four legged animals, with the exception of snakes and some legless lizards
  •  Reptiles have scaly skin 

Amphibians

  •  Amphibians absorb water and vaious gasses through their smooth skin
  •  Amphibians have a lightweight skeleton
  •  Amphibians develop lungs, except for mud pupppies
  •  Amphibians need to keep their skin moist in order to breathe
